WHOA Chuck Vesely's Class of 1957 Pages
|
|
Chuck asked us to post
these photos before he recently succumbed to cancer. We hope it is
one fitting tribute to a great alumni and friend. Chuck also contributed
the '57 Yearbook and other material.
Thanks Chuck for this wonderful contribution! John Prunier '65
Thank you, John, for posting these wonderful photos! Great shots of Angeles, the base, including the "Teen Age Club" and Pantomime Teens, Corregidor, Subic, and Baguio. Our infamous Steve Gladin '58 is in some of these, guys! Others on the "found" list in these pages include Cheryl Nelson, Emily Warfield, Mike States, Ken Hebert, Marlene Jackson, Patsy Graziano Patricia O'Connor. Check them out! Bless Chuck for giving us these lasting memories. They provide great "before" photos for alumni of that era preparing to make the trip back in 2000. And a great comparison for those youngsters who saw such major changes, especially on the base. I shall be visiting these pages often. BTW, Chuck left on the same ship we arrived on so I just missed knowing him. Jean Whitman Brown '59 (57-60) San Antonio '99 & San Diego/Clark 2000 Tampa area anytime |

...We left San Francisco by
ship on Valentine's Day, Feb 14, 1956 and returned by ship in July/August
1957. It's amazing, though, how fast we made friends and got into the swing
of things.
During late '56 and early '57, they "redecorated" the teen club so we had to operate out of a quonset hut for part of my term as president. I have quite a few pictures taken in the teen club and of teen club activities during that year. Something I'm curious about is the "Generals Club". Several of us guys, mainly seniors and juniors, started up a club we called the Generals Club. Karl Barthelmess was the Base Commander so it was only natural that he was the Commanding General. I was the Vice. Several of my photos show us engaged in various activities. We bought an old used car and used to trade it off for dates. I wonder how long it lasted after I left. Did you ever here of it? I had a serious accident jumping for a rafter one night in one of the bus stops and wound up in the hospital with a concussion and what they suspected might be a dislocated neck. Consequently, I missed the first week or two of my senior year and then had to attend school for about a month in a body cast from my waist to the top of my head. It worked out ok but sure was a drag... Chuck Vesely

John - I loved Chuck's pictures. I felt like I was opening an old toy box.. .so many wonderful memories came to life. I guess it wasn't all made up in my mind after all. . .someone else was at all those places too. I kept calling my daughter in to look at the pictures. "See, that's where your grandparents and I was standing when I told you about the pool, library, parade grounds, Baguio." A special thank you to the whole Vesely Family for taking so many great pictures and for sharing them with the rest of us. Judy Hale '67 |
