San Diego

Site for WHS 75-80 Reunion

Sunshine, sunshine, and more sunshine!

Talk to a true blue northern Californian, and he or she will tell you that halfway down the state, people’s brains have turned to mush from much too much sun.

Well, we’re partially right. About the sun anyway.

San Diego has clear, sunny days 75% of the time, less than 10 inches of rain annually, gentle breezes, little humidity, and average summer temperatures ranging from 70-85 degrees by day and 60-70 degrees by night. People thrive in this Mediterranean climate; they relax, have fun, take things in stride. It’s too pleasant to get steamed up about anything.

What You Can Expect from Reunion 2006

Though I will not have finalized details until June 2004, you can expect the following:

§         Group rates that will be good not only during the reunion, but also for at least 3 days before and 3 days after so that you can extend your stay and enjoy San Diego’s attractions with your family (San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Legoland, etc.)

§         A Day Trip to Tijuana, Mexico where we can play the sport of haggling at the bazaars of Avenida Revolución OR some other nearby attraction – the zoo maybe?

§         No formal events. San Diego is too relaxed, and I’m a big believer in doing as the Romans do. I’ll schedule only informal events, and whenever possible, they’ll be held outdoors.

§         Much more strict deadlines than in the past, particularly with hotel room reservations – again, because San Diego’s high season officially begins June 15. Regardless of which hotel we end up, blocked rooms will be released for resale 90 days prior to the event. The point: San Diego will require much more advance planning on all of our parts – as the organizer and as an attendee.

§         Rest assured, the WHS 75-80 Reunion in San Diego WILL NOT be held at the Bahia Resort where an all years reunion was held a couple years ago. I’m not even approaching them for fear that they’ll try to make up for their losses.

Budgeting and Other Miscellaneous Notes

It’s never too early to start saving so that you can be sure to attend. It’s too far out for me to predict pricing, but with so much advance notice, setting aside $35-50/month from here forward will ensure that you’ll have more than enough to bring the whole family.

June 22 – 25, 2006 – Mark Your Calendars!

July and August are peak months for all hotels in San Diego, so a reunion in either of those months will be more costly. Because many of you will still have school-aged children and because school doesn’t end until mid-June in parts of the country, this weekend makes the most sense.

2011 Reunion: Las Vegas or a Cruise

Okay, so technically, Los Angeles won by two votes. And I did say that the top two winners would be the sites for the 2006 and 2011 reunions.

But two reunions in a row to be held in southern California seems to me a bit much. So as your chief organizer, I unilaterally decided that we should vote for the 2011 site during the San Diego 2006 Reunion. And it should be between Vegas or a cruise. I foresee either being a piece of cake.
